01 — One Gesture

A 1px line and its readouts.

One object. Three parts. A hairline in Ember that spans the full width of its container, with measurement readouts at each endpoint. This is not a divider. This is an instrument reading. It appears at 61.8% height — the golden section — on every composition.

THE LINE
1px height. Full container width. Ember #F05A10. Opacity varies by state (8% to 70%). Never thicker than 1px on screen, 0.25pt in print.
LEFT READOUT
Point-cloud format: three floating point values (X Y Z) in JetBrains Mono at 7px. The origin coordinate. Where the measurement begins.
RIGHT READOUT
Scan metadata: reference ID, resolution, timestamp. JetBrains Mono at 7px. The instrument telling you what it measured.

02 — Four States

Opacity is the volume knob.

The scan line has exactly four states. Each state has fixed opacity values for both line and readouts. No ranges. No "approximately." The system is the system.

REST
Line 8% / Readouts hidden. Default state. The line is barely perceptible. A shadow of measurement. Used on backgrounds, ambient environments, resting UI.
SUBTLE
Line 12% / Readouts 20%. The line is visible if you look for it. Readouts appear as ghost text. Documents, secondary layouts, print materials with limited color.
ACTIVE
Line 40% / Readouts 45%. The line is clearly present. Readouts are legible at close distance. Hero sections, key moments, hover/focus states on digital.
FULL
Line 70% / Readouts 70%. Maximum intensity. Reserved for signal moments only: cover pages, hero slides, the scan report header. Never more than once per view.
RULE
Never above 70% opacity. The scan line is never fully opaque. It is always a trace, never a border. At 100% it becomes a divider. At 70% it remains an instrument.
03 — Readout Format

Real data. Real format.

The readouts follow the format of actual 3D scanner output. This is not decoration. If someone who works with point clouds sees it, it should look correct.

BRAND FOUNDATION
Every foot is different.
Every boot should be too.
Athletes push their bodies to the limit. They train in the dark, play through pain, and dedicate years to a sport that demands everything. They deserve equipment that is built for exactly their body.

06 — The Rules

Non-negotiable.

POSITION
61.8% from the top.
The golden section. Not 60%. Not 65%. Not "somewhere in the lower third." This is a fixed coordinate, not a suggestion. When the container changes size, the line moves proportionally.
THICKNESS
1px on screen. 0.25pt in print.
Never thicker. At 2x displays, 1px renders as a hairline. At 1x, it may anti-alias slightly. This is fine. The thinness is the point. A laser, not a border.
SPAN
Full width. Always.
The line runs edge to edge of its container. It never starts or stops in the middle. It never has rounded ends. It passes behind content, beneath images, through everything. Uninterrupted.
QUANTITY
One per composition.
One scan line per page, per slide, per screen, per card. Never two. Never stacked. If you need to divide content, use the regular grey rules from the color system. The scan line is reserved.
COLOR
Ember only. #F05A10.
The line is always Ember. On dark backgrounds, on light backgrounds, on images. Opacity changes. Hue never does. The scan line is the scan line is the scan line.
READOUTS
Optional but formatted.
Readouts may be omitted when the format doesn't allow it (favicons, very small labels). When present, they follow the format spec exactly. Left: coordinate. Right: metadata. Never reversed. Never other content.
07 — Compositional Rule

The line goes through. Always.

The scan line does not avoid content. It does not stop at headlines. It does not skip images. A scanner measures at a fixed coordinate, regardless of what is in its path. The designer composes around the line, not the other way around.

FOOT SCAN
IMAGE
3D SCANNING
Complete geometry.
The line passes through the image. It does not stop at the edge. The scan does not care about composition.
LINE THROUGH IMAGE — Uninterrupted. The line passes behind and through all content layers.
THE DESIGNER'S JOB
The line is fixed. The content is flexible. When building a layout, the designer knows: at 61.8% of the container height, the scan line will appear. Headlines, body text, and images are composed so that this coordinate falls in a natural gap — between lines of text, between content blocks, or across an image where it reinforces the composition. The line does not move. The content adapts.
THE EXCEPTION
At Rest state (8%), the line is invisible enough to cross directly through a word without affecting legibility. This is acceptable and even desirable — it creates the moment of discovery when someone notices the faint orange trace cutting through a headline. At Active and Full states, the designer must compose around it. The higher the intensity, the more the layout must respect the coordinate.
WHY
This is the rule that makes the system interesting. Not the color. Not the typography. A fixed compositional constraint that forces every layout to think differently. It's the equivalent of a scanner that measures at a fixed height — the world arranges itself around the instrument, not the other way around.
08 — Print Behavior

On paper, the line is physical.

In print, the scan line can be produced as a spot varnish, a deboss, or a foil line instead of a printed color. This gives the line a physical dimension — you can feel it. The measurement becomes tactile.

SPOT VARNISH
Gloss varnish on matte stock. Visible only at certain angles. The most subtle option. Like finding a hidden measurement on a surface.
DEBOSS
Blind deboss (no ink). A physical line pressed into the paper. You feel it before you see it. Best for business cards and premium documents.
EMBER FOIL
Matte orange foil stamping. The most visible print option. Reserved for covers and signal moments. The foil catches light like a laser catches the eye.
